Jojoba Oil: What It Is and How to Use It

Jojoba (say ho-ho-ba) comes from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, a desert shrub native to the south-western United States and northern Mexico.

Is jojoba actually an oil?

Not quite. Most plant oils are made of triglycerides, while jojoba is mostly wax esters, which makes it a liquid plant wax. That is why it feels different from other oils, and why it keeps well.

What does it feel like?

Jojoba has a light, silky feel on skin and hair. It is one of the lighter options, so people who find richer oils too heavy often start here.

How to use jojoba oil on skin

Press a few drops onto damp skin after cleansing or bathing. It suits daily use because so little is needed.

How to use jojoba oil on hair

Smooth a few drops through the mid-lengths and ends. Because it feels light, it works well on fine hair that other oils weigh down.

Jojoba vs argan oil

Jojoba feels lighter and silkier. Argan feels a little richer. If you want both feels from one bottle, that is what a blend is for.
