Avocado Oil: What It Is and How to Use It
Avocado oil is pressed from the flesh of the avocado, Persea americana, and not from the stone. That makes it unusual, as most plant oils come from seeds or nuts.
What is avocado oil made of?
Avocado oil is mostly oleic acid. Unrefined oil is green-gold with a mild, grassy smell, while refined oil is paler and has almost no scent.
What does it feel like?
Avocado oil feels rich and cushioned. It is one of the heavier oils, so it suits skin that feels dry and a body routine more than a quick daily finish.
How to use avocado oil on skin
Smooth a small amount over damp skin after a bath or shower. It works well on the areas that feel driest, such as elbows, knees and heels.
How to use avocado oil on hair
Use a little on the ends of thick or dry hair. Fine hair may find it heavy, so start with less than you think you need.
Cooking oil or skincare oil?
Avocado oil sold for cooking is often refined for high heat and sold in food packaging. If you are buying oil for your skin, look for a product made and labelled as a cosmetic.
Avocado oil vs sweet almond oil
Avocado feels richer. Sweet almond feels lighter and spreads more easily.
